Structure and Function of Shafts and Screws
Mechanisms that hold a shaft in a fixed place and convert rotational motion into linear motion are called shafts. Screw surfaces positioned on the shafts enable forward or backward movement when rotated around a shaft. The thread structure of the screw surfaces determines the precision of this linear movement.
Screws come in different types, mainly threaded and plain. While threaded screws have high precision and load-carrying capacity thanks to their tooth structure, plain screws have lower load-carrying capacity but can provide faster movement with their simpler structure.
Intersectoral Importance of Shafts and Screws
Manufacturing Industry: In automation systems and production lines, spindles and screws are used for precise transportation and positioning of materials. This increases speed, accuracy and repeatability in mass production.
Medicine and Health: Medical devices, surgical robots and imaging systems provide movement that can be controlled with high precision thanks to shafts and screws. This allows surgeries to be performed more safely and effectively.
Automotive: In automotive assembly lines and test systems, shafts and screws are used to ensure correct placement and assembly of parts.
Aerospace: Shafts and screws are used to ensure precise movement in areas such as placing parts of space vehicles and positioning rocket engines.
Energy: In wind turbines, solar panels and hydroelectric power plants, shafts and screws are used to optimize energy production and control systems.
